My wife has a great idea for campaign finance reform. Let's model it after American Idol! We start with thousands of hopefuls who get screened out by panels of citizen judges instead of primaries (which are controlled by the parties anyways). Then the best of the best (or the worst of the worst, just for entertainment value) go before a final panel consisting of declared independents. Finish off the whole shebang after a series of shows where someone gets voted off each week. The last man (or woman) standing becomes President. Then the whole process starts over.

For state and Congressional elections, just follow the same procedure at the appropriate intervals. We'd have endless entertainment AND good government. Can you imagine it:

Simon: "And what's your name, sir?"
Contestant: "Barney Frank."
Tara: "And what are you going to do for us today?"
Contestant: "I'm going to sing 'Dancing Queen' by Abba.
Simon: "OK, off you go!"
Randy: "It's a big no for me, Dawg!"
