Just a quick note for Jonathan:
I like to take a page from the old missionary guide and “build on common beliefs.”
One really nice thing about being libertarian is that we can find common ground with both REPs and DEMs.
For example, if being attacked by a DEM because of your support for the freemarket, change the subject to ending the wars and bring our boys back home.
If a REP is bashing your belief in “civil rights” (read Rothbard’s For a New Liberty for a clarification on civil rights) you can turn the topic to lowering/eliminating taxes.
There will still be times to boldly stand up for what is right, but with this tactic I’ve been able to avoid shouting matches at family events.
You don’t have to be in any particular political party to have a calm discussion. But you do need listening skills, patience and a non confrontational manner.
